If you wouldn't believe it, you haven't been playing long. ;-)

There is probably an invisible ranking gate, and we have passed it, but the boat next to you has not. Ranking should get back to normal in few hours. And I should probably add the invisible gates to the chart (at least the defined ones, there may be others)

That I understand but with a so radical effect including the frigate move... it's everything top to bottom. lol and the thing is you can't locate the guys that were around you and you were fighting directly anymore..pitty...

I have since the first VR but this one I didn't remember one similar hahahahah

Post by iconPost by zezo | 2018-03-04 | 21:48:11
Well, the former "leader" is currently ranked 21342
Post by iconPost by nsp | 2018-03-04 | 21:52:51
yeah its ridiculous

With the geniuses at VR you can expect anything...
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2018-03-04 | 22:02:05
Give them some slack. Scoring a sailing event is non-trivial task, almost impossible with thousands of boats. Every automated attempt will fail, one way or another.
Post by iconPost by WoKeN | 2018-03-05 | 10:23:18
I gave them slack for mor than 10 years. Still for instance their JVT ranking is a total mess. You have NO idea where the other boats are if you're between another gate section. I remember in the past there was an actual ranking and you know exactly your ranking. So why did they changed that? Now you have ppl starting legs to get the best gate-time. furthermore only 50 boats fer crissakes?? This was also different in the past. You could see which boat was in your neighbourhood and you could have some company. Now you're sailing practically on yer own.

I stopped 2 years ago sick and tired of VR's customer awareness. Now most likely I will stop again after finishing VOR and CLipper.

The frigate seems to be in the place of a boat in the middle of the fleet, "middle" being defined by median ranking. If the leading boat is ranked in the middle of the fleet because of the scoring gate it's just a collateral damage that the frigate gets in the lead.

After a couple years, you stop getting agitated about weird things like this if they don't hurt your progress to the finish. You just keep going and figure it'll resolve itself. You have to also make the basic assumption that no one good enough to beat you has been sitting on the sideline waiting for the moment to pounce on a strange escort frigate position. With those in mind, you can find it more humorous than upsetting.

Things like the impact of the change to 2 kts min windspeed on the results of JVT, though... THAT's what I reserve my anger for. It's important to remember that if you freak out about every little thing, VR will write you off as a person with an anger issue. If you laugh about the little things and freak out when it matters, they might listen. A little. Mostly they just do what they want to do and regret it mildly if someone quits. Plenty of other people to replace each person who quits. If I quit at #1, that's ok... Someone else will replace me, and the "Happy" race proves that there are 800+ people ready to pay 25 Euros to do a 10-day race. It starts to make sense... why cater to the very precise expectations of the most serious players if hundreds will pay anyway? So it churns through people. When I started (three years ago, during the last VOR), there were some outstanding players that I still consider to be better than I am now. They eventually got fed up and quit. I still view my #1 status as being partly due to their absence rather than my skill and commitment. One day (maybe soon... undecided), I'll be gone too. My patience is thin now. That's ok. The bottom line is #1 is a combination of skill, commitment, and patience, not just skill and commitment.

It's fortunate that I was on a Boy Scouts campout yesterday with my son and his troop. I had to hike to a location where I could get cell coverage, and I don't post to forums in situations like that, so my rage about the impact of that change to my JVT race had a day to cool down before I could start posting to forums again. I think it hurt me, but it may have hurt more others worse, so I'm not sure yet if it hurt my end result finishing position. With that insight, I'm slowly working myself toward laughing it off. But that's very difficult to do now.

For anyone who ever wants to be near the top of VSR, my recommendation is that you get used to how VR does things, and work hard on controlling your temper and doing the best you can to minimize the damage when problems happen, rather than freaking out about everything.

In fairness... I have to say they HAVE improved a lot of things. The continuous evolution of wind, and the 1-minute iterations, make it far more realistic and I love those changes. The 2-kt min is better than the 4-kt min. VRO3 has reached the point where I believe it is now superior to VRO2 (I never played VRO1). I honestly DO believe they're turning out a good product, or we wouldn't be here, and I think it's important that we all remember that before trashing VR. The big problem is that I don't think anyone in the VR organization truly understands the level of personal time and commitment it takes to play the game at a seriously competitive level... and as a result, they don't fully understand how upset people will be when the minimum wind is changed from 4 kts to 2 when you're in the middle of a light wind area after spending 4 weeks of hard work to get there, or how upsetting it would be to the top 50 VSR players to introduce a 9-day Category 2 limited access race for 25 Euros. Either that or they understand those things and don't care because more money comes from the masses who don't play that seriously than the top VSR boats. And that's ok... honestly, it's business, and if 800+ people pay for the Happy race, then I can understand them not stressing too much about pissing off 40-50 highly competitive boats. If those top 40-50 quit, then some of the masses will get excited to replace them and will spend a few hundred Euros over the ensuing couple years before they get tired of it. I can live with that. I'd rather it not be that way, but it's a business, and they need to do whatever they believe will earn them the most money.

Amen to all of that.

But 800*25 = 20K. Let's say in 10 days. Make it 50K/month. Make it 2 parallel races all the time. 100K/month. 1.2M/year. VR business practice requires at least 1M/year. It may barely work. Or it may not work at all when people get fed up.

do't forget that Loic is not sailing for free in VR ....
Post by iconPost by Mullionman | 2018-03-05 | 07:56:10
Once upon a time, you could sail the whole Clipper race around the world for one price. Then they introduced it as a series of separate “races” in place of “legs”. That resulted in reduced entrants.

It must make an interesting calculation for the accountants. High price = less entrants. Low price = more entrants. Free with option to buy extras = more entrants, but to win you you need the extras.

I wonder what their income would be if they charged 10 Euros for every race, full options, no credits, no cards.
Keep the VSR ranking. You never know, they might make enough to bring back real prizes.

Dear Mom (hehe),

Have you noticed my Lol and hahahahaha?

:P

And yes I agree with you. They are improving. Too many bugs still. Ranking stuff, waypoints, not to mention comunication with clients..but even in that I notice they are improving. Finnaly we have some information and Racing Instructions and Announcements etc.

We will get there.

When VOR started, to be honest I didn't see we reaching to this point with the current client interface. I thought it would all explode at some point. I am glad it didn't. And also because of that I have been enjoying more the game.

Although in all fairness the examples you gave in last paragraph are exactly like the one i am going to give you now: "they don't fully understand how upset people will be" to use your words, when someone is one entire Sunday in front of a computer not been having quality time with family just to make an effort to try to be in a good position to attack the rest of the race, achieving to be 5th, and suddenlly everything goes down the riverand ranking 21000+. You can't see your nearest competitors; you can't control them anymore, every reference about distance changes from day to night etc. Sorry Mom. Not whinning. I am still there like you, racing and doing my best, but my example is exactly the same as yours in JVT or whatever you want to give. :)

Anyway...we take it as a chinese gybe lol ..we recover and continue.

Fair Winds and enjoy the race

Nuno

No worries. I saw your LOL and laughs. My rant was directed more generally, not at you personally.

The rankings are still screwed up: a boat that appears to be riding as deck cargo on the frigate ~160 NM behind me is ranked above me - and I'm only 130 from the rhumb line... so I guess some of the invisible gates are in a different dimension?. I know - ignore & sail on, but had to share the frustration.
Post by iconPost by mak08 | 2018-03-05 | 14:18:46
There's no need to be frustrated.
Zezo's satellite view gives you a very good idea about your rank. If your boat is sitting on the edge of the blob, preferably in the general direction where the blob is moving, then you should be fine. If you're inside there's room for improvement. If you're trailing behind it's time to look for a different strategy :-)

It should be correct when we get to Taiwan.
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2018-03-05 | 14:31:22
There is invisible gate at the lower tip of Taiwan too, bit the DTF of the current leaders does not make sense unless it's about perpendicular to the while line or something like that.

I often find top-ranked boats near the frigate, and their course points to the frigate. I think there is a ranking issue with late joiners, and VR are fixing it manually.
