Could you explain the route you choose on the vela cup?
You seem to be alone on this route. i supposed You dont use ZEZO?

I was having a terrible race. I had made multiple significant mistakes and I was off the back of the main pack. So it was a good time for a big risk. With some luck in the forecast, I could have made huge gains. I didn't get lucky, so I've lost approximately 3 hours. I'm running on credits, didn't pay for a full pack, so... c'est la vie. My attitude tends to be... I'd rather finish 2,000th trying to win than 200th without trying.

FWIW... I sailed a real-life doublehanded 140-nm race last weekend. Flew there and back also. So between the flights, the racing, several hours where I didn't have cellular coverage on the boat, and the total exhaustion after doublehanding a race like that... I wasn't surprised to be off the back of the pack. The decision to turn left and take a risk occurred just before I boarded a plane to fly home, having slept about 6 hours in the prior 60.

Thanks a lot for your quick reply. But to choose this option, did you use any tools or it was only your "feeling"? You often have different choice than other top players (using certainly different tools like Zezo or others)...

I just use Zezo, but I often experiment with routing to alternative destinations or from alternative starting points, to see what happens if I force Zezo to try something different. In this case, though... I was an hour behind the leader and took a flyer. Simple as that. You'll see I made a left turn off Tunis. I forced Zezo to route me to a waypoint north of Messina, made the left turn to follow that route, and got on a plane. The plan was simply to get to Messina and then resume routing to Crete afterward.

I felt it had a chance. The winds were going to be light up there, and headwinds for the fleet. An improvement in the forecast, from 3-5 kts for me to 6-7 kts for me, could have made a huge difference. Routers show what the current forecast suggests is best, not what might happen if the forecast changes. Also, in this particular case, Zezo was unable to consider the route I took at all (because Zezo can't sail backwards, and rounding Messina required a little back-tracking).

Hi All,
I have used also this route and I found Your Mom about One hour in Front of me on North of Sicile When we was close in rank (1 and 4)
I was 10 min in advance from her on left of isle,
I chose this way after grounded and about 3 hours back of first.
AS this way implied a route back, never router can offer it.
