VG 2016
Post by iconPost by Mcdev | 2016-11-06 | 13:20:14

Virtual Sailors,

To begin with, I'd like to have some assumptions confirmed (or not...), if you know the answer for sure.

1 - Is there a chart here on ZEZO we can use manually (set starting and ending point). I mean, good polars, good winds etc.

2 - If there is nothing on zezo that we can use, is it possible to retrieve the polars from elsewhere to eventually use them on VRTOOL ?

3 - If the 2 above do not lead anywhere, is there another site with good wind / polars.

I used VRtool a lot for the VG2012 and route du rhum 2014. It helped me very much ! But if we have to play like VR is telling us to play, we could at least find some use in a manual/long term router.

Please try to provide only useful information.

Bon vent !

Regarding the polars I compared VR actuals with Zezo polars a few hours before the start and they seemed to be pretty much the same. Only a random sample but...
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2016-11-06 | 14:29:15
Polars can't be too different as they are based on the real boats.
Post by iconPost by mak08 | 2016-11-06 | 22:03:45
I'm currently heading to 11°00' 42°45'ETA 07-11-2016 19:10 (roughly, with several waypoints inbetween). Comparing with the Zezo route, zezo can't be off by more than 20min. Looks usable :-)

This is good time to say thanks Cvetan for the tremendous work!

Bon vent a tous!

very great Job,inside job so far so good .. indeed . Thank's Cvetan

Based on the game polars, I have created (with the help of the HFR Team) this polar table (primarly designed to be used with QTVLM) :

Theses polars are for the Pro Sails.
Post by iconPost by MikeFloutier | 2016-11-06 | 14:27:25 Seems to be the zezo chart for VG. Suggest inserting current boat position via Menu Start then Destination as usual.
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2016-11-06 | 14:31:19
The winds _should_ resemble the game winds now.

It remains to be seen if they do and how close.
Post by iconPost by philippemahe | 2016-11-06 | 22:38:55
You wrote "current boat position via Menu Start then Destination as usual" dont find any Menu start on zezo page!
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2016-11-06 | 22:56:19
I answered in the other thread. There is a popup menu on a right-click.

Hello to zezo, thx again for all these years of good job.. atm just started VG16 yesterday, i saw the router is dead now, but even manually position, that's not a big deal, but the "winds" are totally differents now... are they coming to be true soon ? thanks a lot..
Post by iconPost by BenArfa | 2016-11-07 | 12:05:22
It seems to be good for me
Post by iconPost by pados75 | 2016-11-07 | 16:44:39
Agree, the winds are really off, where VR shows the Acores HP getting close to spain coast with low winds but not here...
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2016-11-07 | 17:14:02
The displayed winds are still based on the 12-hour schedule, but the router uses 3-hour interpolated wind data itself.

I will fix the display some day too, but that's not top priority.
Post by iconPost by Fast_cubed | 2016-11-07 | 21:27:22
So to clarify, even though Zezo winds do not match VR winds, your routing is still viable?

Post by iconPost by zezo | 2016-11-07 | 21:43:23
Should be. So far I've seen differences of 1-2 degrees and half knot. That should be good enough for long-time strategy.

On the other hand for short-term settings it has always been a good idea to check the polars for peaks, flats and cross-over points and act accordingly.
Post by iconPost by gynjx | 2016-11-08 | 01:29:35
Agree with PADOS75.. the Acores's HP is very close to us and should really make us slow.. but in zezo, you don't go true it because it stay very far . . and for me it's more 4-5 knot difference btw VR and zezo winds . . Don't know if i need to put on "timeshift" or not and "prosails" if it's closer to truth .
Anyway for this time we play very oldschool i guess and i want to say thanks again to Cvedan(zezo ?) for all the crazy free work did.
Post by iconPost by pados75 | 2016-11-08 | 10:15:04
I see what Cvetan means. Check the router details and they match the winds of the game, not the winds displayed.
Post by iconPost by nauplius | 2016-11-07 | 13:06:00
hey Cvetan, you get lots of friendly encouragements to continue your work. For positive incentive, I also click there and there (on the adds) on a regular basis ;=))))
Best of all!

Hi Cvetan !!!! The winds looks wrong, even on the infos when the mouse is on the black point .. ?? I'm so sad about their chagement ..
Post by iconPost by NORTHKOREAN | 2016-11-08 | 07:04:45
Hi Cvetan, yes it seems tha the winds are wrong
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2016-11-08 | 07:12:26

I forgot to schedule a task for 0H UTC. Which made the winds to fall 24 hours out of tune.

This one is fixed, but keep watching for glitches and don't hesitate to contact me if you spot huge differences.
Post by iconPost by NORTHKOREAN | 2016-11-08 | 07:19:45
Thanks, it matchs!
Post by iconPost by flop-13 | 2016-11-08 | 08:05:00
I don't understand, in effect when I check with the winds in VR, it's not the same with you, but your winds in 12 hours, are the same of the currently winds in VR...

Thanks for your job guy
Post by iconPost by gynjx | 2016-11-08 | 10:17:29
Yes exact, the winds match mutch more in 12 hours zezo for the actual time in VR...
Post by iconPost by sorg | 2016-11-08 | 10:30:43
Here are the polars for the basic set of sails:

and for the Pro Set of sails:

Thanks to HFR Team.

Hi Cvetan, thank you for your tremendous work! One other question. The dots in the red and green track tool, are they matching the displayed winds (thus still wrong) or the new interpolated winds? If the dots are not correct it is good to know. I can still use it for measuring direction, but not for timing then. Kind regards, Anton
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2016-11-08 | 12:42:58
Yes, the tacks are way off. The only correct info is the heading. Will be working on this today if I have a little time.
Post by iconPost by MouetteJambon | 2016-11-08 | 11:25:06
Thanks a lot for all this work, the router seem to be in a nice working order.
I'm still a bit puzzled by VR flaws, with some random ~90° wind rotation at display sometimes, corrected when refreshed.. Hope it doesn't impact much the course of the boats
Post by iconPost by sorg | 2016-11-08 | 13:13:22
Is there a way to type directly the boat coordinate rather than direct right clicking on the map ?
I find it a little bit difficult to locate precisely my boat.
Post by iconPost by jago3813 | 2016-11-08 | 18:31:35
Hi, I do get difficulties to set start point & destination, changing zoom factor (directly or with the mouse wheel) completely changes what has been set before. Also the number of days seem to be randomly changed. Finally, I do get "Goto Fernando de Noronha" in the menu (Right-click"). What am I doing wrong? Not using the correct chart???
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2016-11-08 | 19:44:26

It seems that certain session ID is shared between many users. Perhaps someone posted it in a forum somewhere and then maybe it got cached by a search engine that way, but a lot of players are "stealing" each other's boat position.

I blacklisted the specific id in the server, but you may need to clear your cookies for and start with a clean link not including the sid=be0b8acdb55d7a96969352a9c766d399 parameter in the URL.

You can also change one of the numbers in the above string to something else.

Please let me know if some of that solutions works (or it starts working by itself)
Post by iconPost by gynjx | 2016-11-08 | 21:36:29
Hello, thanks for this advice, i cleaned the cookies and everything else, for me now the actual winds are the same than the actual in VR, but when you put +12h the wind don't change in zezo, and when you put +24h, you actually find the +12h of VR.
I just share my own result, maybe for others it's different, thanks for your work.
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2016-11-08 | 21:52:36
The wind display is still off. Did not have the time to rewrite it.

But the router uses different data based on 3-hour interpolated winds which should be close enough to what the game engine uses.
Post by iconPost by polo218 | 2016-11-09 | 07:56:02
I mentionned this problem in topic "no more boat position" using Google Chrome. Resolved this with a newly installed (empty cache and no cookies) version of Mozilla Firefo.
Post by iconPost by jago3813 | 2016-11-09 | 10:06:12

It works nicely now I have cleaned the cookies as suggested.

Thanks a lot!

The Fernando de Noronha island is there on purpose. The round the world route goes close to it more often than not.

If the default destination is Cape of Good Hope or something like that the routing will take you along the African coast where you will get stuck for weeks on end in the doldrums and then experience headwinds in the Gulf of Guinea and further South.
Post by iconPost by snubbel | 2016-11-08 | 23:28:14
Hi,what do you mean by 'stealing your boat position.
yesterday I fell back from position 5000 to 150.000. Does that mean that somebody took my position?
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2016-11-09 | 07:03:07
No. I mean like clicking in your window. The chart pages are made in a way that you can keep two windows open within one browser with two different boats. That was useful 5 years ago where one account could officially have multiple boats.

But it also means that you can open one session ("window") in multiple browsers on different computers. It does not share your login, just the chart settings like boat position and zoom level which can be very confusing.

Good evening, Cvetan.

when we make a right mouse click now I select The Fernando de Noronha island, when we will select you another destination like Cape of Good Hope, for example? To take on the most optimized route and not too Brazil closer Thanks in advance.
Post by iconPost by SYSeaSick | 2016-11-10 | 14:01:50
You can set whatever destination you want, e.g.Cape of Good Hope, by right clicking and select "Set as destination". In this case it is probably not the best choice as Cvetan explained in an earlier comment.

Hi Zezo,

Thank you for your time and this marvellous work.

Fernando de Noronha is now ahead 6/7 days i guess. Do you plan to set up a further default destination point ?

Thanks a lot
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2016-11-10 | 13:53:28
I added a waypoint to the menu around 30S/30W. Looks good place to me at present time.

BTW the routing works up to 10 days now. May add back the 16-day forecast, but the GRIB data does not come in 3-hour increments more than 10 days ahead. Have to fix the math to use the 6-hour data.

edit: It's 30 West, not East.
Post by iconPost by morsel | 2016-11-10 | 14:05:03
Agreed, even 30S/28,5E...LOL
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2016-11-10 | 14:14:02
Hmm we could try a shortcut wit the monohull indeeed, but it depends on the state of the weather systems in 2 weeks.

On the other hand the maxi trimaran may gain more from a coastal route (in general), but I'm not playing the Sodebo challenge.

As a side note I seem to be sailing in the wake of Armel Le Cléac'h and company by just following my router, so we must be on the right track.
Post by iconPost by gynjx | 2016-11-10 | 20:36:32
Agree, we must be on right track, at this time no real difference btw 4 days and 10 days router so .. no problem :). In my opinion is better to keep 10 days /3h than 16 days / 6h increment. Weather is already not sure at 10 days so finally I think is perfect like it is now. I must thanks to you (again) for your amazing work.
ps : I searched "zezo" boat to see how the boss use The tool :-D .. not found :p.
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2016-11-10 | 21:25:16
"Big Bird"

The 10-day forecast shows a low pressure system that could benefit a shortcut a bit off the Brazilian coast.

P.S. I'm testing the proper forecast display and will put it online tomorrow if everything is OK.

In the meantime 30S 25W looks like a good destination, with the route going on the East edge of the isochrones parallel to the equator. Just saying ;-)

Armel using on board, maybe?

Cuetan, now i can only see TWA up to 3 hours route (green circle), after that it change dramatically. I thing is better to see up to the next wind updates, 8/20.
