I've added a gate in the Solitaire to leave Noirmoutier to port. Going the other way around could possibly work, but you have to negotiate the narrow channel and account for few sail changes and tacks.

Click "Ignore gates" to see the outcome sans the narrow channel part.

The router currently likes the idea, but it has unrealistic expectations in the channel. It seems to think we can reach through there at TWA 75 or so. In fact, we'd need to tack a couple times, beating into a wind that's blowing straight down the channel.

The difference at Mark 1 is roughly 15 minutes with the current forecast and that inaccuracy... Anyone have insight into whether or not correction of that inaccuracy would cost more than 15 minutes? (Aside from the risk of running aground while short-tacking through a tiny channel)

Are any adjustments to the router's definition of those landmasses possible, to force it to recognize that a couple tacks will be necessary to get through there? No worries if not.

The chart resolution is to low to recognize the channel.

But even if it did the 10-minute step would be to bit to sail inside it.

The only chance to sail that channel is by waypoints, so a waypoint scenario can be tried in advance if sailing full pack.

It does not account for tack and sail penalties, but with some luck with the wind direction that could be just two tacks and two changes. 2-3 minutes penalty with pro sails. Add half mile upwind at 4-5 knots - another 6-7 minutes. But then there is also less wind on the East side.

Thanks. I'm running on credits, so I can't run a waypoint experiment without buying a pile of waypoint cards and then burning them. Tough call. It seems like the outer route can also be sailed a little faster than the router thinks, by hugging the island closer than the router is willing to try. So it's probably a very close tradeoff.

Here's a different question... If you run a waypoint experiment in advance... Does it use the current wind or the projected wind, to calculate your ETAs?

I'm guessing the current winds... if I'm right, then you can't really do a waypoint experiment with any accuracy until a few minutes before the start.

From my experience it use rather "projected wind", but you must activate enough long time with "auto sail change" to let them calculate correctly.

The key word here is "before the start". Before the start the game uses the current wind as current wind, so all experiments can only be run shortly before the start.

There is a good reason to avoid the narrows between Noirmoutier and the mainland : there is a road there opened at low tides (named "Le Gois"), so there must be enough water to get through. You are thus right to put a gate there Cvetan, even is high tide is about 5 pm today there. Anyway, the route leaves Noirmoutier on port right now even without the gate.

I saw the road, but it should be under water in the gshhs dataset, which uses high water datum.

Hopefully there is no hidden sandbar in the VR chart.

VR is not down, but login seems to run into a timeout most of the time.

Even when you've managed to log in, the server sometimes acknowledges commands but does not execute them.

Obviously the problem related to the display of 'real boats' still exists, when one would assume they'd test it before adding real boats back in. Grrrr.

The actual rock is pretty small - 50 meters or so. Not visible at that chart resolution. Even Google does not bother showing it on the sat imagery.

ok...so I guess my real question is: can we go around mark 2 as we would do if it was a buoy in the water, or do we run aground if we cut "through" the buoy while rounding it, as VR put some rock underneath which we cant see as it is so small that it is covered by the buoy?

Hello All, i have exactly the same question: It looks like the real Fastnet is a rock, true, but the coordinates seem to be different from the buoy 2 : am I mistaken?

On google i found Fastnet 51° 23′ 21.48″ N, 9° 36′ 10.68″ W

While buoy 2 on dash is 51° 27' 27¨ N 9° 44' 21¨ W

Could you please peer check? Merci

Not sure if it is the same coords as they used in the Normandy race but they weren't the real rock coords either. I happily treated it as a bouy in water passing as close as possible in that race

The green marker in the Dashboard map is the one you need to leave to starboard. The green arrow circle should be around the green mark, not the red one. Sorry about this.

The positions displayed in the tool tips are correct however (as far as the game is concerned). So the game has Fastnet rock at 51°22'15"N, 9°37'04"W.

@Fouras_17 Just move your destination point on the West coast of the island if needed.

I can add a gate that prevents the router from crossing the Point of Ayre longitude south of the island, but then that could be a valid routing decision in certain weather - crossing it and going back.
