Hi,

I'm looking at the next races and i'm having some surprises :
- one time a forecast : OK
- one time an incomplete forecast,
- same on Yokohama record where i'm cruising around Taiwan,
Is it because it's too early? problem in connection with VR ? Well deserved rest from zezo (almost its creator) ?
No urgency in the answer. Thanks

Another point :
How to insert a picture in a message, as the map of a forecast ?

The router can only sail the Dardanelles in certain conditions. The router runs in 1-hour steps at that time and the long tacks in the straits may be impossible.

The forecast is too unstable one week ahead and sometimes it makes it and sometimes it does not.

The Aegean is my backyard, so there are some things I can tell you about the weather patterns there.

Part of the summer is dominated by a wind called Meltemi https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etesian, but it requires a fair weather in Bulgaria, and right now we are entering the thunderstorm season. The actual Meltemi forecast is usually evident 3-4 days in advance. Windsurfers here start packing for the Greek and Turkish islands when they see it ;)

Hello,

I am having a look to the race Aegean Circuit and i'am afraid there is a mistake in buoy colour. In fact i don't how it will be possible to leave the checkpoint N°10.13 on starboard...

IS somebody could explain to me.

Thank's
Regards.

Hi
Zezo has "some difficulties" to go to Didim (better in ocean...) from Istambul, because the way isn't logical.
So we could start, and forecast Didim when we'll be nearer from Kos island.
We are in Mediterranée, and winds are very irregulars & light at this moment.

Someone at VR really loves to create gates as it seems. A little fewer gates would have been enough.

Anyway, the checkpoints look OK to me. There is another gate in group 10 (10.12, between Velona and Gümüşlük). It is enough to clear either one.

In order to go through gate 10.13 instead, you would have to climb up north again and sail around Leros, after rounding Kos.

Thank's for your answer @hardtack. But i do not understand. Is this buoy 10.13 has to be leaved starboard to have your course available ?

Gate 10.13 is in the same group with 10.12, and you only need to clear one gate of each group. You don't need to pass through 10.13, it makes no sense. We'll be coming from Kos and pass through 10.12 instead.

Hello,

Thank's a lot. I didn't know this point. That's clear now for me.

Guys, I am a newbie so you will forgive my question. I do not see all these gates you are talking about. I see in the game only a buoy on Kos island that should be left on port. Did I miss something??

Ciao Gavitello, a newbie quite excellent ! ;)
To see the gates you have to enter the map mode into the dashboard, just zoom in and you’ll see all the gates they’ve put in place

Ciao Velaska !
Thank you for the fast answer :-)
Are all these gates mandatory? Or are there only for VR to calculate the ranking of the boats?

They are both. See the Skagen race two topics down.

This is a map where the zezo router will be hard to use. Have to work it out waypoint to waypoint and make the best of it. I took winches option for a change because the Dardanelles look like fun with the expected winds... I am thinking that a bicycle would be faster to get to Didim :-)

There is a significant difference between the forecast in VR and the forecast in Zezo for the next couple of hours...

I see the same like you ...

It looks like a bug somewhere, the winds in VR are crazy.
Post by iconPost by Luis75 | 2020-06-17 | 16:50:03
yes...also TWD in the dashboard is completely different than TWD in the game

Post by iconPost by Hardtack | 2020-06-17 | 17:28:37
The wind direction jumped by 106° between 16:55 and 17:00 UTC. I got a gybing penalty although I only changed TWA from 126 to 135 :-(
Some boats seemed to be heading off in the wrong direction altogether.

The TWD displayed in the Dashboard is assumed to be what the server uses to move your boat.

You may see your boat moving in a jagged line in the game UI - that's because the UI does dead reckoning using wrong wind data and then moves the boat to the corrected position on the next server update.

I feel less alone, having had "little problems" with settings at that time...
for me problems appeared around 16h20 UTC

Keep in mind that VR uses a minimum windspeed of 2.0. The real GFS file probably had winds of 0.1 or 0.2 or something extremely low like that. Pretty normal in real life to encounter the "die to zero and fill in from another direction entirely" scenario... It just gets messed up in VR because the minimum windspeed means your boat never entirely stops moving, and the UI discrepancy from he server causes some really weird and confusing representations. I try to trust the dashboard and ignore the UI entirely in those cases, but it's really difficult to do that when you're also very close to the beach.

Without the minimum windspeed, I figure boats sailing at 0.3 kts probably would barely notice the impact of this weirdness. You might take an extra sail penalty, or sail the wrong way briefly, but you'd be going so slowly that the impact would be extremely small.

Thanks Mom for this reminder.
I think that a certain number of players, including me, have to believe in "another bug" VR while it is true that the situation that we have just encountered should not have happened for several weeks.
With this wind force the impact is not catastrophic either ;)

Very unusual race so far, aside from just the light winds... Usually we see offsetting phases of fleet compression and expansion... but this one seems like it has almost all been fleet expansion ("rich getting richer"). The first day of the race had more wind near the front and less for the back. Then the front was the last to drop to 2.0. Then the timing of the big windshifts requiring coastal gybes/tacks in the dardanelles appeared to come with better timing for the front. Then the first 800 boats or so were able to exit the dardanelles without tacking whereas the rest had to. Then the leaders has more wind from a better angle for the first part of the southbound leg.

It looks like we might start seeing some fleet compression 10-15 hours from now, for the next day or more until we get to Kos. It'll be interesting to see if it's enough for the fleet to come back together or not.

The GFS not account for this very well, but the weather in the area is affected by diurnal thermals.

They usually lead to strong N in the morning and weaker N or light S later in the day, depending on the larger pattern.

So the time of day you pass certain places becomes quite important.
