I see :
Marcusbelgicus
Your Mom SA
Kluck

freaking VR is not letting me see anyone else in the area.

Feel free to add to this. Looking for folks within say 5 nm of the lead of the North Group.

Before i Gybed out sideshow was best positioned IMO. now there is a split so its kind of hard to say whos best untill everyone converges again.

When I zoom out far enough, I'm always in front :D

I'm a couple of nm behind the North Group leaders. Not bad for an NMS sailor with all options, but limited on programming ;)

25 kts, Melbourne here we come

Well done ;-)

Big Bird @ zezo.org..... he wished to go unnoticed...lol

Post by iconPost by nsp | 2017-12-13 | 18:21:24
And a good old sailor from the beggining of VR used to navigate in te old "6D2" now on helm of "Seaside" trying to recover from a not so great position..a little bit like RQ- Naos in leg 2 :))))

And Nicobaiona and Cobra Pourpre 1st and second in RORC as to Nauplius the 3rd in RORC, is doing an interesting route.

I'm thereabouts too...

5 Nm SW of Zezo's Big Bird. Can't find anyone on my starboard (near, of course). Just these guys mentioned above (at north)... Boat Mizaza 1.

There is one boat in North a long bit longer north to the other group comming fast "Ice cool"
Post by iconPost by Lasse | 2017-12-16 | 01:40:53
A few hours ago I was on the 9:th place but now I'm loosing places because I went (maybe) a little far to north.

/Lasse boat name n'Lasse
Post by iconPost by nsp | 2017-12-16 | 02:34:36
North group will be a roller coaster of leading till late in the leg, a LOT of the boats can get if wanted to number one for a bit..even for a bit.

Simply that's not the point... :)
Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2017-12-16 | 12:10:39
last night a split occurred in the nroth group. those that suddenly appear in the lead are even further north

the north north part of the group containsToppen, Tessa94, Marcusbelgicus, Charlie2010, tame bird, sideshow and VSR-leader KLM2235

in the south part of the north group there is even less wind at the moment with BigBird, Swedesailor, YourMom SA, MacAll and myself

looks like it's gonna be tough in the last group for the next 18-24 hours. any tactical options down there other than following zezo at heading 98 ?

Post by iconPost by zezo | 2017-12-16 | 12:30:34
It's more like one long front without distinct groups. With ETA within 10 minutes of each other last time I checked.
Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2017-12-16 | 12:50:21
okay, I can only follow 20 or so boats :(

we will see in 5 days

can you see more with the positions you get from all boats using your router?
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2017-12-16 | 13:01:54
I can, but I don't usually do it. And I don't have Boat name -> id mappings, so I can only see if there is someone out there but there is no way to see who it is.
Post by iconPost by nsp | 2017-12-16 | 14:29:27
Indeed you are right as I see also its a front of more than 60 miles. In this moment anyone can win.
Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2017-12-16 | 15:09:09
as long as VR does not suddenly introduce an ice limit, like in the real race where they all have to go north because of the ice exclusion zone extension ;)

otherwise were in deep ice down south. you're much better positioned at the moment
Post by iconPost by Swedesailor | 2017-12-16 | 15:55:18
Looks like a really close one at the end if things stay like this :P

I am carving a bit more south when the wind picks up a little.

Any dissapointing surprises in front of me down there ?
Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2017-12-16 | 16:16:21
apart from the introduction of a sudden Ice Exclusing Range or a mastrail delamination, no ..
Post by iconPost by MichelleWhy | 2017-12-16 | 13:40:42
I use positions given by the boats when you click on them and put them down to the router as a starting point. Doesn't look like there is an advantage for any of the boats for now.

I've been within close distance to the northern group yesterday morning, but then started sailing further south for a predicted lifting breeze. Not sure if that will pay out. Seems it is delayed until later tonight.
Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2017-12-16 | 14:23:05
yeah, that;s what Cvetan also did to tell there is 10 min. difference predicted at the finish line. too tight to call ;)
Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2017-12-16 | 15:26:16
we're very nearby, also to Cvetan. But why is my mainsail reefed and none of the others around me, in 3D ?
Post by iconPost by JohnT | 2017-12-17 | 00:18:30
I see the same thing (mine reefer and no-one else). Maybe theyw orry about the details for our own boat, and just have a generic (unreefed) image for any others..I
I'm assuming that a reefed main is probably not a bad call with over 25 knots, but they don't give us reefing as option to play with...and hopefully they won't!
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2017-12-17 | 00:20:39
Reefing probably goes with the use of a heavy sail.

By design the current sails used by other boats are not visible to the world, hence the full main.
Post by iconPost by Lasse | 2017-12-17 | 00:44:59
Mine is not reefed. And not kimigbg's either (the current leader).

And I have heavy sail now.
Post by iconPost by CaptKAOS | 2017-12-16 | 19:06:40
I’m 2 nm just North of KLM 2235
Post by iconPost by DeepBrine | 2017-12-17 | 05:00:21
Currently reefed with 28+ knots of wind and the heavy genny up.
I noticed the reefed main thing a day or two ago but figured it was just a graphics thing. My boat speed still matched the polars, as did boat speed of boats around me that did not have reefed mains.
Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2017-12-17 | 10:36:52
race leaders in the north are gybing and DTL is dropping ...
Post by iconPost by WaterHammer | 2017-12-17 | 12:21:17
Distance to the real leaders is not dropping I'm afraid. ;-)

Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2017-12-17 | 13:39:37
DTL is just a ranking by DTF in a straight (not really) line to the finish, like in the real VOR

for me it is now 13.6 nm (position 672), where it was 25.4 nm last night (1630) ...

Post by iconPost by Sir_Petrus | 2017-12-17 | 14:00:33

Post by iconPost by WaterHammer | 2017-12-17 | 14:21:36
Thank you for the explanation. I was referring to hidden ones straight in front of us on our line or slightly below. Also the group 1 hour north of us may be eagerly waiting to gybe on top of us if the wind heads a bit more. That chance will be in about 1-2 hours from now, as later the wind will veer again.
Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2017-12-17 | 14:33:14
The hidden ones are in the ranking by DTL. So if they loose ground to us in the same way the other leaders do, they probably hang out in the same area at the current leaders.

you're a mile ahead of me, very near
Post by iconPost by WaterHammer | 2017-12-17 | 14:25:10
I've now found Your mom SA dead in front of me.
Post by iconPost by bndtrm2611 | 2017-12-17 | 16:25:25
Check the weather pressure systems for the next three days and you will see the disadvantage of the north group. Wind speeds are not significantly different but TWA does not favor lower angles to the North position. The next opportunity for gain will be the lift to the South group then roll overt he pressure circulation for the run the the finish.

Now it's all about the best angle.
Post by iconPost by WaterHammer | 2017-12-17 | 16:48:26
I hope my c0 will be sufficient for the whole run (did not invest in heavy and light sails).
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2017-12-17 | 18:07:58
My no money boat (foils + c0 + winches) is just 10 miles behind the leader.
Post by iconPost by DancingBrave | 2017-12-17 | 18:25:26
This prolonged C0 stretch has enabled me to keep my noMoneyBoat* up there too however I think the likely LightGennaker favoured run-in to Melbourne will do for us :(

*winches-foils-polish-c0
Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2017-12-17 | 20:14:48
used a heavy gen mostly the last couple of days, but it did not bring much compare to you guys on C0
Post by iconPost by Inicio | 2017-12-17 | 20:09:43
Alina (Foils+C0+W&P) is 8 miles behind the leader (after 2 hours at 90º TWA a few days ago by a mistake)
Zezo's power!
Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2017-12-18 | 23:41:48
clear split now, between those who gybed and those who didn't, at least from my view with the boats I'm following

wind direction seems to be the same (249/250), wazzup?
Post by iconPost by bndtrm2611 | 2017-12-19 | 19:49:49
The north group is doing the lemming thing....like one design...the south group is lookeing at the header and to capture the low pressure system. The north group will have to dive down hard to capture the low pressure..

It's all about the angles.

Post by iconPost by nsp | 2017-12-20 | 00:40:52
dive?

Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2017-12-20 | 08:40:40
dive indeed? how far north are they?

clear convergence towards the line going on
