"Escort Frigate" nearly in front!
Post by iconPost by Misil208 | 2017-12-10 | 20:19:07

Soon late starters from "Escort Frigate" can be the first boats in the fleet!
So stupid to have that "Escort Frigate" close to the fleet.

It's always been there, good ole pilot boat. It's better to have an idea where newcomers are starting (for them and for the other players)

JD1 tried an alternative approach, noticed that it didn't work at all and in stead of a ruined race, he's teleported himself to just 7 nm from the leader
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2017-12-10 | 21:02:48
We saw that coming, haven't we?

To me it's not that bad. Not fair for sure, but acceptable.

He would probably recover to a similar position anyway. Now, if he got grounded there and got teleported 7 NM behind the leaders 10 days from now that would be serious issue.

Pilot boat for late starters, one thing. Perpetual rescue boat, 600 credits any number of times, seems somewhat unrealistic for a game that pretends to mirror a real-world racing event (thinking back recently to Greenings in Clipper, and Vestas Wind in VOR). Maybe the price goes up for each rescue. Really agree with you, Cvetan and Per.

In the UG version you had the option to run 5 boats on different tracks as long as you paid for their options and the best one counted.

Rumor was that it was actually a VOR requirement in order to make the game more accessible to the newbies.

Sideshow proved them wrong by sailing multiple boats in some legs but actually won the car using only his #1 boat.

Those were the days.... :)
Post by iconPost by nsp | 2017-12-11 | 00:33:47
yes but....it bennefits teleports in the beginning of the race when compared to late teleports....

so glad frigate was escorting leader and leader in that moment were at te wrong place...lol

Of course, everything can be "acceptable" in a "virtual" race... The only unacceptable thing will be the individual limit acceptance....
Sometimes I like to speak just for speak...

The Rescue Frigate equates to race insurance. VR could incentivise gameplay with an Autorescue function. No speed reduction penalty, just cost, now that players are accustomed to the money grab motive. If your boat(s) bump coastlines or icebergs, etc., and remain untouched for a cycle, Autorescue kicks in with a relaunch off the H-pad, all AO functions intact. It could be the AO++ package. Progressive pricing.

VR would happily sell their own grandmother if there was someone ready to pay for it.
Post by iconPost by nsp | 2017-12-11 | 00:56:39
if its a young and pretty one why not?
ps: with some expertise of course....

My only reason to try and calm things down is that I'm too tired of it all.
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2017-12-10 | 22:19:53
On a somehow related note, I wonder why big part of the fleet is heading in the way of the rescue ship. Is that what the HELP cards say? Or is it the other way around and the ship is actually position "in the middle of the fleet"

I'd understand most boats going East, but most boats going SW in this leg is a mystery.
Post by iconPost by Bigsandful | 2017-12-10 | 22:49:28
i believe the ship is positioned in the middle of the fleet because during the clipper the frigate started going around king island to the north but, next time I checked, it had magically teleported to the south side of the island. also players who had recently teleported to it were exactly midfleet.
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2017-12-10 | 23:26:19
Question is what does "Middle of the fleet" mean. Boat with a numeric rank 1/2 of total number of players? That could explain some things.
Post by iconPost by nsp | 2017-12-11 | 01:08:41
Frigate it was a little behind the leader of the race.. you kiddding..imagine he was in the right place doing the right heading...
Post by iconPost by Bigsandful | 2017-12-11 | 05:12:08
yes the boat i first noticed was in the 13,000s of nearly 27,000
Post by iconPost by SnowPetrel | 2017-12-10 | 22:38:46
Good question/observation, as always, C.
Some options:
1) Rescue Frigate (RF) position is reactive to distribution of top 100 rankings at any moment, as a geometric function of DTF (as evidence, it shows no track history)
2) RF is infected with Pied Piper syndrome (e.g., routing into intended danger, cha-ching)
3) RF is on secret Greenpeace mission in Southern Ocean with no interest in VOR

So recapping: the Rescue Frigate is skippered by VR grandmother, who stays in the middle of the fleet so she can collect barrels and distribute card for the evening bridge?
I love this forum

don't forget the intravenous shots for grandma....she likes to trip
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2017-12-11 | 08:19:31
Looking at the boat Mårten, the JD1 teleport probably did not have positive net outcome.
Post by iconPost by lorenzo | 2017-12-11 | 11:51:40
Weird. AT 10 UTC the RF is heading straight south.
Either they place it in the center of gravity of the fleet or the old lady is drunk and heading to pole to get some ice for her gin tonic

All I know is that EF keeps following me. I'm gonna have to go faster to escape it's deck gun!
Post by iconPost by DancingDjMike | 2017-12-11 | 22:11:30
don't you have a rear torpedo tube on starboard?
Post by iconPost by DeepBrine | 2017-12-11 | 22:43:55
I went with the "Pirate Ship". All my guns face broadsides... Great for those last minute scrambles to the Finish Line.

it's heading straigth for the heart of the depression ;)
Post by iconPost by nsp | 2017-12-13 | 09:00:46
bahhh 4knts of wind in the eye
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2017-12-13 | 12:41:49
I'd bet there will be a lot of teleportations in the next 24 hours as the current leaders hit the wrong side of the depression.
Post by iconPost by nsp | 2017-12-13 | 13:30:31
Didn't think about it...but you are right hahahahaha

that ship is a moneymaker.
Post by iconPost by Gonads | 2017-12-13 | 14:33:26
A moneymaker?? sure
But i see it more like sanctioned cheating.

Post by iconPost by nsp | 2017-12-13 | 19:11:58
well...so... it's fake racing! agree
Post by iconPost by DeepBrine | 2017-12-13 | 20:05:48
If someone is so badly placed that relocating to the EF is an improvement, they deserve every break they can pay for.

Just imagine if half the fleet pays the 600 credit fee and teleports to the EF. The EF will move slightly closer to the front of the fleet but still be behind half the fleet. Not really worried about that kind of threat.

I am pretty certain everyone on this forum is able to stay in the top half of the fleet, if they want. I do wonder if teleporting to the EF makes all past buoy rounding sins go away. That could have helped out a few of our forum members.
Post by iconPost by Luiz | 2017-12-13 | 20:13:55
What if?

The position of the frigate is determined by the "center of gravity" of the fleet.
All the participants behind the frigate teleport.
The center of gravity will move a little forward.
Repeat the operation, and again, and again, until you reach the leader (P2 indeed)...

You would see an almost infinite number of credits coming into VR account. hehehe...
Post by iconPost by lorenzo | 2017-12-13 | 20:42:48
> until you reach the leader
Zeno's paradoxes will prevent that!

In a race, the quickest runner can never overtake the slowest, since the pursuer must first reach the point whence the pursued started, so that the slower must always hold a lead. as recounted by Aristotle, Physics VI:9, 239b15 and nicely available in wikipedia

" makes all past buoy rounding sins go away"

Were there any buoys in this leg????
I messed up with the RORC and would hate to have messed up again

(and I still think it is cheating..... ) if you fuck up in real-life, you must bear the concequences. As it should be on the VR
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2017-12-13 | 20:57:17
Take a breath. No gates or ice limits.

Guess we can prepare proper sailing instructions for the next legs if VR can't be bothered to do it.

DTF is measured along the Great Circle from a boat's position to the finish in Melbourne. Of course the lowest DTF makes the podium at a given moment. But those boats way down south with the lowest DTF will be behind those in the north group by at least 24 hours, unless they teleport to the Rescue Frigate, which is now about 200 nm west of the north cluster. In other words, the value of the rescue is diminishing.

Post by iconPost by zezo | 2017-12-13 | 22:18:49
Now even the Frigate is on the wrong side of the low.
