Hi Cvetan,
As you know, wind forecasts are available on Ugrib site at least three hours before they are applied on VirtualRegatta at 08h00 or 20:00 (UTC+1).
Which of those forecasts do you use for your route calculation: the VR forecasts or the Early ones ?
Thank you - best regards and good luck in VORG.

The early ones. 2 hours before the VR games and 1 hour before the VOR.

Only about 3 days of forecast are available at the public NOAA serveres 3 hours before the game update, which is fine if you're close tho the goal, but partial forecast may be misleading if you look at longer tracks.

What site do you get your weather from? I have been wanting to load data in to Expedition software and see the difference in routing just for fun, but I can't seem to find the correct files for the 1 degree data. What weather files are you using? Thanks.

I use grib2 0.5 degree resolution files from http://nomads.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/gfs/prod/

Most tools did not support grib v.2 last time I checked, but that was two years ago.

Thanks. So to clarify, would you use the file

http://nomads.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/gfs/prod/gfs.2011112712/gfs.t12z.master.grbf00.10m.uv.grib2

as the proper wind for the next 12 hour race segment?

The forecasts that the games use are
gfs.t00z.master.grbf06.10m.uv.grib2 and gfs.t12z.master.grbf06.10m.uv.grib2

VR used the wrong forecst for years - gfs.t00z.master.grbf09 insead of 06, but fixed it two months ago.

you can easily convert grib2 to grib1 using the cnvgrib utility : http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/codes/GRIB2/

(it can be built on windows using Cygwin )

Thanks again.

@fab: Expedition software supports reading grib2 files, so no need for conversion, but thanks.

@zezo: Thanks for providing a great strategic tool and congratulations on a great finish in leg 1.
