I can't remember the good times to the "predicted times" checkpoint last year, but I remember trying to find routes to Cape Horn in under 16 days. Might have seen some under 15 days. Not sure. The trouble is... The northbound Pacific section is more critical to your end result, and that can't be predicted at the start. If you hit Cape Horn just right to catch a fast ride up the Chilean coast, and then also get lucky with a system near Mexico and Los Angeles to finish strong, you can overcome days of slow Atlantic work. So the "predicted times" table is far less valuable in this event than some others. I might start before Tuesday, or on Tuesday, or not at all. Haven't decided yet. Events like this can be very frustrating because you can spend a month optimizing your race and then finish 800th because people who started a week after you crush your time.
Edit: I am leaning toward starting early and viewing my first run as "card collecting"... If I do that, my first run will not be optimized and my goal will just be to finish with 20+ programmation cards and enough time left to do a second run. But... this depends on what boat they choose and the finish deadline. It may turn out to be impossible to do two runs... in which case it would be best to wait as long as necessary to be confident in a good start.
Another Edit: 2019 was in Maxi Trimarans 110%. Fastest boat in the game. Winning time was just under 29 days. He finished just before the race closed (Awkward Turtle had a similar start time and missed the finish deadline by about 2 minutes). Next best was 29:06, and only about 50 boats finished under 30 days. 600 or so were under 31 days. Anyway... the next record event is La Mauricienne, which starts 65 days after NY-SF opens. So... If we're still using Maxi Tris 110%, then the window to attempt two runs is pretty narrow, and planning to do two runs really limits your options on timing for your second run. When the first one finishes, you'll need to restart within a few days to have a chance at finishing the second run. If we aren't using a Maxi Tri 110%, then two runs would very questionable. Assuming the event closes on October 4.
Of course... I really hate paying 1,000 credits to restart these events. If that doesn't bother you, you could sail to Cape Horn and then restart 2-3 times and still have time to finish a run.
