In the East group who's that one some 60 NM NW of me? He looks in a very favourable position!

BTW thanks for the dots Cvetan!

Are the dots positions of the boats, like it was before in VR?
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2018-01-07 | 12:42:41
Not quite like before - I was fetching user and friend position from VR back then. Now it's just actual routing requests.

I also see a dot 15 NM NE of me ;-)

Nice.
I just saw one 45 Nm NE ?!

Three suspicious dots around Sudest Island. Let's hope someone is planning the passage ;-)

Cvetan, might it be dots from bad input by users?

Post by iconPost by zezo | 2018-01-07 | 13:02:21
Sure. A dot will appear every time you "set as starting point" in the chart.

uffffffff. relieffff

OK, I just thought there is a much better hull polish on the market :)

Zezo, dots are great. It also seems that EAST is much more "nervous" than WEST. Many dots on East. Also there are two ships in the West, checking every 10 minutes, making dotted line. :)
BTW, if I position starting point in the West it does not show me dots in the East, but if I put somewhere in the middle, it shows me also dots on East. Please live the dots, and if possible implenet to Clip and other legs, if not too hard for server to handle. Thanks

hm, can dotted lines be a bot, not a boat?
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2018-01-07 | 13:53:31
dotted lines are someone checking his position every 10 minutes or so. maybe with the extension and auto router window, just changing races.

so every 'set as starting point' adds a dot ;)

Cvetan
LOVE the dots.....thank you so much for the additional information....

Hi Cvetan,
Thanks for the dots! This is fantastic.
How long are the dots staying? Will you leave them there until the race is completed ? Or remove them after an hour or two? Either way the information will be interesting: Seeing the progress of the race or a snapshot of the 'current' positions.

P.S. Another thing that 'Super' won't like! ;-)

Dots are transient. Maximum age 60 minutes, cleared every 10 minutes during weather updates because I just reuse the data used for the tracks.

Using the extension I can replicate big part of the VR data, positions tracks and everything (like back in 2012 when I was building animated KMZ files) but don't think they deserve making the game more fun (and only getting blame for that).

Regarding fun game, I have this crazy idea.
Surely one could create a similar game like VR, but it can only be so good with 2D.
If we really would like to have a challenge similar to real boats, then it would be great to see a game in 3D, taking place on a boat. What you can see from that boat is what you can see in terms of your competitors. Of course you will have a computer below deck, and of course with a routing software (in this case the routing software could be fully integreated with Zezo, and with that endless possibilities, like plotting multiple courses, using waypoints, and so forth... (like an overlay software on top of Zezo, sort of, only available in the game).
You will have a radio, satellite mobile, internet and so on, so one way or another you can get information regarding your competitors.
You have a crew (= autopilot. when you need to sleep, you instruct your crew how to steer the boat at certain positions). Then some extra challenges, like whales coming too close to the boat, or drifting wood). And crew-members getting sick.
If you run-aground, you can pay 500000 of your virtual coins to get a new boat. And of course 1 Virtual Coin = 1 Euro ;-)
And of course you have to wait 1 week for the boat to be delivered.

Daydreaming heheheheh. well we all can me someday at anypoint of the globe and do a real race.

I think we all would be satisfied if we had more sail combinations. The real boats can use up to 3 headsails. Why can we use just one?

That would be a big improvment. And while there's no problem having routing systems available for everyone, the sail configuration shouldn't be suggested anywhere, making you to study how your boat goes faster, just like in real VOR.

baybsteps...

jib, staysail, light jib, ...
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2018-01-08 | 09:14:09
But in real world you can see the boats flying three headsails simultaneously.
Post by iconPost by Bigamist2241 | 2018-01-08 | 11:24:15
two days ago we saw MAPFRE flying away Vestas and TTOP like a ninja. Nobody knows what they did, but it must be something to do with sails setup.

This would be a massive game changer in VR! Although playing with tactics is cool, being a skipper is also leading what's happenning inside your boat and whatever makes her go faster than the others. In VR the speeds are the same for everyone as long as you have the rigth materials.
Post by iconPost by LJadra | 2018-01-09 | 10:59:28
The game is using polars to provide speed. The real boat can go faster or slower than polar speed, somewhere form 80-110 %. Depending on driver, trim, etc.
Maybe we could have the same sail inventory like real boats, but not allowed to take all sails on board.
Post by iconPost by karriv | 2018-01-09 | 11:12:03
This would be a very cool feature!

In the end this game comes down to two main factors:

1. Choose your strategy (the route on high level)
2. Implement that strategy as well as possible on a short term tactical level (increasing complexity of sail selection would have an impact here)

Having to choose sails to bring with out at the start of the leg would actually bring a totally new factor into the game. One would need to analyze the leg in advance to make the selection. Furthermore, with different sail selections we could see more different strategies.

Who be the three dots at approximately 5 10 8 S 159 28 1 E or about 50 miles 316 degrees from the Eastern pack? This was at about 15:20 UTC on the 9th.
