Hi,

Somebody dropped me a hint that it's possible to get the boat position in the Vendee Globe game, so I wrote a little Google Chrome extension that automates the process.

It's a bit rough around the edges and needs some work in certain areas like documentation, icons, user interface and so on, but I decided to publish as it is and improve later.

How to use it:

1. Install the extension
2. Go to the Vendee Globe Race interface
3. Click the spinning boat to open the 3D viewer
3. Click the little blue icon in the Chrome toolbar
4. Profit! ;-)

The icon is grayed out on other pages. If recent position is available it will open a new tab with the charts. If there is no position data it will try to give you a hint what to do.

edit: If you get the "data too old" warning with the 3D viewer open it's usually enough to close it and open it again because clicking the "X" causes a refresh by itself.

My Position is W 10 50' 10" and N 81 19; 07"
Yes, I know it's really far away from the official track !!! ;-))
Longitude is OK, but Latitude has been taken as N 80 0' 0'
Did you set some limits on the North?
I want to sail there ;-)

This tool has been working great. I am trying to figure out how to use this on my android phone. Can't find a way to put on your extension. Is there a way to do this?

Chrome does not allow extensions on the mobile platforms.

But even if it did the game has to run in the same browser, which it does not because it's packaged as application.

So we are stuck with the paper and pencil method of entering the boat data - that's one more use of the lat/lon input fields. On the plus side the position is available in the mobile app right from the start without opening the 3D view.

Now the boat position is present on the main screen!
No need to enter into 3D Mode.

Position has always been present in the game, but the communication is encrypted. The 3D viewer makes a request to get the weather conditions and that request is in plain text.

I have updated the plugin, but it will take time until browsers check for updates.

You can go to preferences->extensions->click update extensions now.

If that does not work you may have to restart the browser - not sure how exactly the update process works.

2.0.3 is the one expected to work.

Chrome keeps running in the background sometimes even after you exit it.

I'd release it earlier, but there was no 3D view in the sprint race, so no way to test it, and it's a bit tricky to get the router to open with the correct data for the race in the current window.

I think that disabling and then enabling the extension after the upgrade may also help.

You still have to update the race and open the 3D viewer for every game window you have open.

The coordinates are displayed for the other race if ypou current window data is stale or not in 3D view.

In fact, it is working if after you open 3d viewer, you open any kind of window and after you come back again on VR and clik on 3D VIEWER then on extension and it works

Hmm you have a point. You have to switch to another tab and back once. But I usually have about 20 tabs open and was worried about the opposite situation - do you get the correct race when switching tab, so put the testing effort there.

I will fix it, but it will take some time to update.

Hello, it doesn't work for me. it works very well and it stops since 01/03/17.

I unsinstall the extension 2.0.4, use ccleaner, resart the computer, reinstall version 2.0.4. and still displays coordinates in a popup.
Can tou help me. I use chrome with XP.

May I suggest you to migrate to a recent version of Windows. Compatibility of recent developments with this kind of old systems is very hasardous.

I keep an old XP virtual machine to check for that kind of incompatibility.

But the strange thing is that I could not get the game to run at all. Upgraded Chrome to the last version supported under XP, but it still says "You need WebGL enabled browser"

Any tricks to get the game running under chrome 49?

I always use the last version as possible. actually for chrome, it's version 49.0.2623.112 m.
I try to run de game with firefox 50.1.0 and it doesn't run. Xp is at my office.
I have a little notebook with windows 7 and with the last version of firefox or chrome, it doesn't run because I don't have enough memory. so I use teamviewer from my house. I asked to my commputer guy for my office, he looked at few minutes but doesn't know why.

2.0.4 (actually from 2.0.3) supports more than one race, so tries to get the address of the current tab and open the appropriate chart.

The proper method of doing it has changed since Chrome 49.
