Dear Cvetan/Group,

I have thoughroughly enjoyed playing around on the site; this note on the home page got me thinking: "It might be possible to modify the code for use in real conditions, right now it is based on the game logic - discrete 1 degree wind squares and 12-hour forecast updates. Using it in the real world would require a bit more data points too, like currents, tides, waves, real boat polars and so on."

Most commercial navigation programmes have such a feature, which is usually very simple (just based on wind, not necessarily customised for the boat polars). There are now some open source navigation programmes floating, around; my favourite: http://sourceforge.net/projects/opencpn; they lack this advanced feature, however.

How would you feel about publishing the source code so as to kick-start the development of a free software take on weather / route planning software for real boat navigation?

Best regards,

Max

The current algorithm is extremely simple. The real optimizer is about 150 lines of code, and I've outlined the idea in the 'Optimizing the optimizer' post.

That information is enough for someone to implement it even if I don't publish the actual code. I had that mental block for three months myself, just thinking how complex it would be, and not wanting to deal with complex tasks.

And I don't mind contributing few lines of code to active and well managed open-source projects, so any references and contacts are welcome.

Development of a free software regatta programme is now under way.. It's just lacking polars and routing support ;)
