Golden Globe Race 2018

With your knowledge of how the game works with Game and Client servers. Do you think that VR would be able to create the Golden Globe race starting on July 1st? The race is the same as for the first solo circumnavigation 50 years ago.

The real boat rules are that they have only instruments from 50 years ago. So no GPS or routing. The boats are mainly Rustler 36.
The game route should include the gates that the real boats have to use.

You cannot hide routing software such as yours from gamers; but if VR did not use gadgets such as foils and extra sails. Only gave out positions every 12 hours and you limited routing advice to 24 hours, could it work?

That would be entirely different game, especially the "No GPS" part. If the game has to know one thing, it's your current position.

I was just wondering if the game could be changed to incorporate DR position. But I agree that would have to include leeway, current and even an error in course accuracy. Not something that computers like. I also think that VR would not like a race that could last over 300 days.
But for the real racers I have huge respect.

I think there are still more than a few older sailors out there who are quite capable of navigating you around the world a lot more accurately than DR. they would need a good sextant, reduction tables, a chronometer and a set of paper charts (including routing charts). The wikipedia article suggests achievable accuracy of 0.25NM. (Definitely much better than I ever achieved!)
A great example of the practical challenge of navigating with a sextant on a small boat is Ernest Shackleton's voyage from Elephant Island to S. Georgia, which was repeated a few years ago by Paul Larsen:

That's exactly what they are doing in the Golden Globe. Sextant and paper charts. No electronic aids. A hand written log. An HF radio. No water maker. A towed log. Only a wind up chronometer. Not even a digital camera (they have to use film). I think the youngest skipper is Susie Goodall (28). And all in a boat between 32 and 36 Feet designed before 1988. They do have a sat phone for once a week safety calls and a portable GPS in a sealed box (disqualified if seal is broken).
My suggestion for the game was to have 12 hour accurate positions from VR but then you have to DR on. A sextant reading in a computer game would be too difficult for most.
