Same here. With NZ destination.

I changed destination to New Guinea and it obeyed the Gate

I think it is because you end up closer to Auckland going that way maybe? Not sure. I tried switching to 16 day but that still didn't work. Had to set destination to a spot on the other side of the point for a while, but now it is working again..

It's the angle between current direction (around 0) and GC to Auckland (about 140) that becomes too wide. You may need to set different destination for a while during the firs tack North along the coast.
