iIs there some kind of rule that states you have to drive your boat threw the mark instead of just rounding it like normal? It takes quit a bit of time to go threw it.

the green marking is quite rapid, considering you went from the right side of the buoy.

For instance, for Fastnet Rock on the Normandy Channel Race, you must pass north of it, from east to west. If you come from the south, then go around the buoy by its west to try to validate it on its north side, it won't.

The marks that spin you just have to round them in the direction they spin correct? What is the reason to drive threw them?

You want the shortest possible path. That usually means 'get as close to the mark as possible without hitting it'. Same in real life.

Don't hit the mark with the center pixel of your boat at max. zoom ;)

Is that any part of the mark image and how do you know where the centre pixel of your boat is when it’s all black and covers the background?
Post by iconPost by sailorjerry | 2018-06-01 | 19:12:51
That's what I thought. Wanted to make sure. But Ursus Maritimus I like your Idea. Is that like getting to the finish line in Cardiff and falling asleep and waking up with your boat aground and 2000 boats passed by.

the center pixel follows the white dotted line (WP and HDG) and you need to see water at both sides (max. zoom). Carefull with TWA because your poisition and heading depend wind spead and direction.

If it is tricky, I make a screenshot of the piece of coast before my boats is half over it ;)

But, there's always the risk of the server overrulling what you see it in the client. You may be repositioned a bit and end up ashore.

The VR user interface is totally crap for accurate manual steering. I prefer waypoints, if I have enough of them.

Thanks for the tip, Bear of the Sea, I used up 3 waypoints to go round Palermo mark yesterday where it was literally a 180 degree turn, keeping the course fast for the same sail all the way through and seemed to gain about 0.5nm and went from 45 to 25 :-)

Made up for the 40 minutes on the wrong sail earlier that cost me 0.6 of a mile, grr..

if your center pixrl hits ground before the line, yes. Eventhough half your boat is accross the line alreay :p

Honestly there is more to this game than meets the eye.I appreciate the input of everyone on this Forum.I also have not been vary pleasant to the VR support team.Sailing is about terminology and with out a doubt I am adding a new chapter ion my book . Thanks again to all.

I'm sorry Ursus Maritimus but I still can not see how you can know where the center pixel of your boat is. I know the center line but not where it is along the length of the boat.
Also I am happy about avoiding land but are we saying that we can not touch any part of a mark. What about Mark 2 in the Monaco, it must be a 1/4 mile long? I would have thought that a mark must have an infinite position (pixel) and that if we know where it is on the image, we could avoid it.

In the days of Pacotool and the ability to transfer that info to VRTool, it was easy, but what do players do now? Or are those tools still there?

afaik, a mark has the dimensions as shown on the map in VR. you can't touch it with your center dot
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2018-06-02 | 20:15:45
The mark is a mathematical point in space. Longitude 2.11111111111. Pass at 2.1111111111112 and you clear it. Pass 2.11111111111110 and you don't. Resolution is much better than a pixel at max zoom level.

For practical reasons a pixel in the UI should do it. Unless the old parallax error is still there. If you can place a waypoint and compare its position against the mark (with numbers from the dashboard data) - go for it.

so you can sail right through a buoy with your boat-pixel as long as you stay on the right side of the buoy center?

I really should get me a second boat to try this stuff out ;)

In NCR, check out the tracks of myself, Tipapacheri, and Djonny at buoy 3. When we arrived there, I was leading Tipap by something like 0.20. He gained 0.1 or so on me by cutting it closer than I did. Djonny cut it too close and had to go back. The center is somewhere between Tipap and Djonny's lines. Mine was a decent, fairly conservative rounding.
Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2018-06-03 | 03:40:02
the traces that boats sailed are interpolated very roughly and not suitable for that kind of analysis. Maybe during or shortly after. So Djonny did not run aground, but simple rounded it the wrong side?

Post by iconPost by Mullionman | 2018-06-03 | 08:16:37
Could the positions (Lat/Long) of marks be put onto the Dashboard? Then we could compare with boat position to safely go round.
If not then the position of mark 2 in the Monaco would be useful here in the forum.

You can see it in the address bar if you select "Go to Palermo":

tlon=13.458105586729&tlat=38.253567853702 (in decimal degrees)

or about 38°15'13"N 13°27'29E
Post by iconPost by Mullionman | 2018-06-03 | 10:12:28
Thank you. Why didn't I think of that!
Post by iconPost by gushami | 2018-06-05 | 13:57:33
First try did not go well for me. WP at 38°15'16"N 13°27'36"E but it seems I made the turn at 38°15'16" 13°27'28" already. Maybe I'll add some mariginal next time

Post by iconPost by gushami | 2018-06-05 | 14:53:44
Taking a closer look at these figures, I move 26"E every 2 minutes so the turn could have appened at 13:20:57 (13:20:20 + 120*8/26 seconds). Doing half speed after the turn meens I passed the mark again aprox at 13:22:10 and most probably I was still to close to 38°15'13"N lat.
Lesson learned: Do not turn at such sharp angle (25°) if you are to far from the mark. I should have been closer, coming in at 38°15'14"N had been better.

The coordinates of the points are available in the version v3.1 which is not yet published I have a "bug" which I can not correct for the moment ...

Hi all,

Great work on the extension. I find it very very useful.

Is it possible to also have a date and time for the final "flag". Right now we can only see the date and time for the last dot.

Keep up the great work

Michiel

The extension only reads what zezo provide on its routing path...
Post by iconPost by Sambaopreis | 2018-06-06 | 06:26:57
Aha, so maybe a question for zezo.
Post by iconPost by Ursus Maritimus | 2018-06-08 | 08:29:38
A final flag with data in zezo maps would indeed make it easier to compare more acurately the options before the race as well as positions of opponents towards the line in the race

Is such a thing feasbile, Cvetan?

Are the buoy coordinates in the game in decimal or DMS format? i.e. are the decimal ones in the zezo url correct or a conversion from DMS?

Post by iconPost by zezo | 2019-02-18 | 16:16:51
The original data is in decimal:

"start": {
"lat": 17.068336,
"lon": -61.661358
},

as is all position data in the game - waypoints etc.
Post by iconPost by kewcom | 2019-02-18 | 19:46:27
is the buoy the red topmark or the base of the buoy?
Post by iconPost by zezo | 2019-02-18 | 19:47:12
Center of the base.
